The Age of the Hungarian Great Principality (ca. 850–1000)

Abstract

Before the Hungarian Kingdom was established as a Christian state around the end of the first Millennium, Hungarians had already lived for at least 150 years within the political framework of a state. There are fundamental differences to the pre and post millennial state apparatus, and it is, therefore, necessary to explain why one has to take into account the existence of an initial, pre-Christian state in the early period of Hungarian history, what exactly can be defined as “state”, and what were the characteristics of the political formation of the Hungarian state in the ninth and tenth centuries.
