Abstract
Every healthcare system needs to be based on an optimised model of delivery to ensure quality and efficiency in the most cost-efficient way possible. Healthcare models with optimal delivery systems result in long-term sustainability. The UK spending on the NHS has for the majority of the years up until the turn of the new millennium, maintained in the region of the 3 to 5% of the national gross domestic product (GDP); however, this has risen to just under 10% of the GDP with a predicted rise of a consistent nature in the years to come. This chapter provides an overview of some of the innovations, measures and models that have been implemented to optimise the delivery of care by the NHS.
