Abstract

The two most important infrastructures in our society are energy and information because they define our civilization’s level of technical advancement. The Kardashev scale (Kardashev, On the inevitability and possible structures of super civilizations, https://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/pdf/1985IAUS..112..497 K) measures a civilization’s technical prowess in terms of a simple metric: a type I civilization is able to harness all the power that reaches its home planet from the parent star, which in our case, is about \(2 \times 10^{17}\) watts. A type II civilization would be able to harness all the power radiated by its parent star, including that which does not reach its planet. In our case, this will be \(4 \times 10^{26}\) watts.
