Refugee and Immigrant Entrepreneurship

Abstract

In this section, the activities of refugee women entrepreneurs are explained from different perspectives. The disadvantaged position of refugees in the labor market of the host country can lead them to entrepreneurship. However, there are many obstacles in front of refugees who want to become entrepreneurs. In particular, women entrepreneurs seem to be facing many obstacles such as gender, ethnicity, and class. Despite facing many obstacles and disadvantages, refugee women entrepreneurs are seen as business owners growing faster than male and local women entrepreneurs in developed economies. In this context, refugee women entrepreneurs play a critical role in the economy of the host country in terms of income and employment creation. For this reason, the study aims to reveal the obstacles (threats) and facilitating factors (opportunities) for refugee women entrepreneurs. Syrian refugee women entrepreneurs in Türkiye were chosen as the sample. The reason why Syrian women refugee entrepreneurs were chosen as the sample is that Türkiye has recently accepted a large number of Syrian refugees. In the qualitative research, how Syrian refugee women entrepreneurs gained their entrepreneurial identities and how they implemented entrepreneurship was questioned through the interview technique on the push and pull factors.
