Refugee and Immigrant Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Migration has become one of the most important problems in the last decade. According to the United Nations migration report, the number of international migrants in 2019 increased by 51 million and reached 272 million. As the number of international immigrants grows faster than the total population, their share in the world population is increasing day by day. Parallel to this increase, there are changes in the economic, sociological, cultural, and demographic factors of the communities receiving immigration. In the 2020 “Global Trends” report published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it has been announced that Türkiye is the country where the highest number of refugees is accepted in the world. In the report, Türkiye has been the country hosting the largest refugee population for the last seven years without interruption. This situation has caused an increase in the quantity of academic research on refugee entrepreneurs in Türkiye. As a matter of fact, the number of academic studies on refugee entrepreneurs in Türkiye after 2010 is over 2000. In this direction, the study aims to evaluate the academic research on refugee entrepreneurs conducted in Türkiye in the context of methods and tools, and to reveal the dimensions of the subject. In this review, not only the data analysis methods used but also the basic tendencies of the researchers in research design, data collection and data analysis, which is the basic stages of research, and the extent to which they comply with the generally accepted methodological principles will be analyzed.
