Abstract

The hepatobiliary system consists of the liver, intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts, and gallbladder. Fine needle aspiration specimens are obtained from the liver and, potentially, the gallbladder through image-guided percutaneous or endoscopic approaches. Intrahepatic bile duct epithelium is frequently identified in liver aspirate specimens while extrahepatic bile duct epithelium is more frequently evaluated by brushings obtained in endoscopic ultrasound-guided procedures and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This chapter details the cytomorphologic spectrum of normal hepatocytes, biliary ductal cells, and gallbladder epithelium in a variety of cytologic preparations. The frequency and utility of cytologic evaluation in each of these organ sites is also highlighted.
