Abstract

The digestive tract includes the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and anus. Direct sampling of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using a wooden spatula or brush can be performed on the oral cavity and anus. Otherwise, endoscopy is the primary means for obtaining GI cytology specimens either via direct brushing or fine needle aspiration. This chapter discusses the cytomorphology of normal GI tract elements and highlights potential diagnostic pitfalls in cytologic evaluation.
