Normal Cytology

Abstract

Recognition of normal cytologic elements can enhance the diagnostic accuracy and confidence of cytologists. This chapter will focus on reinforcing knowledge of various cytologic preparations as well as cell structure, type, and arrangements commonly seen in the evaluation of exfoliative, aspiration, and touch preparation cytology specimens from a variety of sites. Cytomorphology of extracellular material is also highlighted, given the potential for misinterpretation as abnormal elements.
