Abstract

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an infrequent neoplastic pathology; in Italy, about 1500 cases are diagnosed every year, and it is characterised by a poor prognosis. The first goal is to make a precise diagnosis. Cytological examination performed on the pleural fluid has a low diagnostic yield, of approximately 30%, and the correct diagnosis requires a biopsy. Thoracoscopic biopsy is considered the best diagnostic method in the most authoritative literature; it enables us to obtain a precise diagnosis in over 90% of cases.

Thoracoscopy, in addition to allowing for a precise diagnosis, contributes to the staging of mesothelioma, especially at the initial stages. At the same session, it is also possible to perform talc poudrage.
