Abstract
This chapter describes the experience and findings of preservice dance and physical education teachers who investigated the disciplinary literacies of their fields. In a course titled Literacy across the Content Areas for Dance and Physical Education, students conducted interviews with 47 professionals related to their fields, including: athletes, coaches, trainers, dancers, choreographers, and a variety of administrators. Interviews focused on uses of print, multimedia and movement or physical literacies in the professional lives of the interviewees. Findings about the texts and practices are presented. A case is made for preservice teachers to conduct disciplinary literacy inquiries and use the information to inform curriculum and instruction in Pre-K-high school settings.
