Abstract

Self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) are those directed toward oneself that pose imminent risk of harm. SIB can produce tissue damage, among other injuries, and has the potential to cause significant harm (e.g., detached retina) or even death. Understanding why SIB occurs is a critical first step to being able to treat it. The behavior-analytic conceptualization of SIB, which considers the behavior to be primarily determined by environmental contingencies of reinforcement, has played a central role in the development of a diverse array of empirically-validated treatments. In this chapter, we (a) describe SIB and the unique risks associated with its occurrence; (b) detail conceptual frameworks that have contributed to contemporary explanations for SIB; (c) describe various applied behavior analytic interventions for SIB; and (d) outline a comprehensive, practical assessment and treatment process capable of producing socially meaningful improvements in the lives of those who engage in chronic SIB. We conclude by discussing treatment considerations for treating seemingly intractable SIB that appears to be automatically reinforced.
