Introduction: Corporate Ownership

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Value Creation for Owners and Directors

Abstract

This chapter presents different ownership types and illustrates the main characteristics of how ownership is exercised. We qualify ownership types according to the other roles owners might also assume: founder, Chair, CEO/General Manager, board director, shareholder, or a combination of these. This categorization distinguishes ours from more usual explanations based on ownership structures and looking at ownership mostly as exerting “control” over a business. This classification allows for a clearer discussion of the interaction between ownership and governance. It is an important first step in providing the context for all three parts of this book.
