Abstract
Recently, HR 6819 was proposed to host the closest black hole to Earth in an inner binary, and an outer, tertiary Be star that formed according to the single-star channel. This makes HR 6819 a cornerstone system both in the hunt for quiescent black holes, as well as in the context of the origin of classical Be stars. This chapter discusses the initially proposed interpretation of the HR 6819 system. It further describes an alternative interpretation, which explains the system as post-mass transfer binary without invoking the presence of a quiescent black hole. The chapter further provides a description of new observational high-spatial-resolution data, which settles the debate around HR 6819. It demonstrates that HR 6819 is indeed a close binary system consisting of a stripped star and a classical Be star. Finally, it discusses the possible evolutionary history of the binary system.
