Abstract

This chapter examines Sangelaji’s relationship to Wahhabism and Salafism. Like Wahhabis and Salafis, Sangelaji saw his mission to fight against polytheism. He accused the majority of Muslims for being Muslims in name only and accused them of in fact being heathens, kuffar. Most of all he was critical of a number of theological concepts within Imāmiyya Shīʿa that he characterized as polytheistic. It was such claims, among other things, that led his Shīʿite critics to accuse him of being a Wahhabist. As can be seen from this chapter, his ideas were not fully compatible with Wahhabism. This chapter addresses the main issue of this book, that is, Sangelaji’s relation to Salafism. In what sense was he inspired by Salafist ideas? If so, what definition of Salafism would apply to him? This chapter examines whether one could use deculturation theory and ideological use of history as theoretical frameworks to grasp Sangelaji’s world of thoughts.
