Abstract
This chapter discusses the expectations of supervisees and supervisors. First, it will discuss supervisors’ perceptions of supervisees’ expectations. The analysis of supervisors’ narratives showed 10 supervisees’ expectations. Supervisors think that supervisees expect supervisors to make themselves available, support, respect, provide space for ventilating, have a plan/direction/advice, help solve problems, enhance learning, facilitate reflection, share alternative perspectives, offer honest feedback, be accountable, and maintain continuity and counsel. Second, from further analysis, 13 expectations of supervisors from supervisees were identified. These included coming prepared; taking follow-up action; analyzing issues from different perspectives; discussing ethical dilemmas; being critical, honest, and responsible; and having a proper focus. Finally, similarities and differences in supervisees’ and supervisors’ expectations are indicated to enhance professional supervision in social work. These expectations help us think about the purpose of supervision discussed in Chap. 4.
