Enlightening Professional Supervision in Social Work

Abstract

This chapter will discuss the general process followed by supervisors and the essentials and content of professional supervision identified by them. Although some models include a beginning stage in the supervision, it is unclear what supervisors do or think about it. The analysis of interviews with supervisors showed that the beginning process they follow is wide-ranging. Some keep it open, flexible, informal, and conversational, whereas others follow a structured, contractual process. Further, it discusses 17 main elements or essentials and 10 core themes/content of professional supervision shared by supervisors. Both the essentials and content of supervision seem to revolve around the administration, education, and support functions of supervision, but these are mainly driven by supervisees and active listening and guiding by supervisors.
