Enlightening Professional Supervision in Social Work

Abstract

The contexts of organizations and practice settings significantly influence the nature of professional supervision in social work. This chapter will discuss different organizations and practice settings where most social workers work or are likely to work. Some organizations discussed are government organizations (GOs), non-government organizations (NGOs), not-for-profit and for-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, philanthropies/trusts/foundations, corporate social responsibility-oriented organizations, international NGOs, and multilateral organizations. Social work practice settings include social protection/security, health and hospitals, private practice/mental health, child welfare/protection, family/domestic violence, schools, corrections, community, research/policy/advocacy, and rural and remote. In these organizations and settings, one crosscutting context of supervision is line-management supervision versus non-line-management supervision and their respective strengths and weaknesses. Finally, a brief summary of the chapter is presented in the conclusion.
