  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Enlightening Professional Supervision in Social Work

Abstract

This chapter presents a broad overview of social work as a profession and its global expansion and discusses some of the critical challenges it faces. It raises the question, whether social work has met its mission and the politics surrounding it. Some of the changes and challenges discussed include colonization, neocolonization, and decolonization; deprofessionalization; populism, nationalism, and welfare chauvinism; digitalization and online trends; and the sustainable development goals, climate change, and disasters. Finally, the chapter briefly reflects on the implications of these challenges for professional supervision in social work.
