Developing Supervisees’ Being

Enlightening Professional Supervision in Social Work

Abstract

The main purpose of this chapter is to discuss the supervisors’ views about the supervisee as a person and professional social worker and how supervisees’ “being” can be developed. By analyzing the narratives of supervisors, the first part presents the holistic view of looking at the being of the supervisee, rather than separating them as a person and professional social worker. The second part discusses the supervisors’ views about how the supervisee’s being can be developed. This beginning discussion suggests there is the potential to use the professional supervision platform to holistically strengthen the being of the supervisee with a focus on developing virtues and qualities, and supervisors can play a crucial role in this process.
