Enlightening Professional Supervision in Social Work

Abstract

This chapter discusses whether and how supervisors try to develop virtues or qualities in supervisees as part of professional supervision. Although supervisors’ responses to the question were not straightforward, after some probing, they revealed how they developed some qualities or virtues. The analysis of the narratives showed qualities of strength, confidence, honesty, reflecting, listening, non-judgment, courage, warmth, power, humor, challenge, and making decisions. Some of these are evident in the social work code of ethics and professional practice. However, drawing on the analysis of our interviews, we believe there is scope for purposely focusing on developing virtues or qualities of supervisees and social workers generally.
