Abstract

The assessment of thyroid nodule composition is an important aspect of the determination of a given nodule’s risk of malignancy. Along with other ultrasound and clinical characteristics, thyroid nodule composition will impact the decision to pursue fine needle aspiration. Nodule composition is described based on the ratio of cystic to solid components. Predominantly cystic and spongiform nodules are most likely benign. For solid nodules, based on their size and other nodule characteristics, fine needle aspiration can help determine the likelihood of malignancy.

In this chapter, images and descriptions of the various types of nodule composition are reviewed. An interesting case based on nodule composition is presented, and challenges in interpretation of ultrasound findings are also discussed.
