Abstract

Quite by chance, I became aware of Vincent L. Gott MD from an abstract prepared for a Carbon Conference and contacted him, offering test samples of quasi-crystalline carbon structures General Atomic could supply. Test them he did. Consequently, General Atomic was awarded a contract to study its carbon for use in the Artificial Heart Program, a government-funded study. I also participated in an informal Gordon Conference held in Vermont. Our objective was to determine the effect of the crystalline structure, surface chemistry, and surface topography of carbon on the sorptivity of heparin and the carbon’s compatibility with blood. The stage had been set for General Atomic’s entrance to the medical device field.
