Abstract
Dr. Ragone was the Head of Metallurgy responsible for fuel development with me acting independently to sort out the science of soot. Rosalind E. Franklin, best known for her work on x-ray diffraction images of DNA, pointed the way to determine how the structure and properties of quasi-crystalline carbon were dependent on the temperature, gas composition, total flow rate, and surface area of the fluidized bed reactor in which they were deposited. The quasi-crystalline structure turned out to be remarkable. It can be manipulated through processing to get anything you like. In the limit, perhaps even diamond.
