Abstract
In this chapter, Luiza Porto writes about the life story interviews conducted with her grandfather, Mr. João Batista, who was compulsorily admitted to one of more than 30 Brazilian asylum colonies intended for people affected by Hansen’s disease. The author problematizes the practice of oral history in the face of unforeseen events in family history. Memories relegated to silence for more than 50 years are examined, as well as the strategies employed by Mr. João when putting together the loose threads of his personal history in the present.
