Abstract

Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal condition and a leading cause of disability and economic cost. Neck pain can often be acute and self-limiting; however, some cases may persist to become chronic in nature. To localize the source of pain, a comprehensive history and physical examination is essential. Furthermore, a thorough examination should be performed to identify any red flag symptoms. Common sources of neck pain include muscle strains, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis involving the facet joints, cervical radiculopathy, or inflammatory disorders involving the cervical spine. Management of neck pain varies depending on the etiology of the pain; however, initial conservative management includes physical therapy and pharmacologic therapies. In patients with inadequate pain relief, injections or surgery may be considered.
