Endovascular Management of Post-Operative Bleeding

The High-risk Surgical Patient

Abstract

Surgery can be associated with different risks of postoperative bleeding, which are influenced by patient-related factors, types of intervention, and surgeon’s operative skills. Post-operative bleeding can lead to higher morbidity and mortality as well as a significant economic impact.

Hemorrhage as a post-operative surgical complication has been traditionally been managed surgically; however, over the last two decades, endovascular techniques have been increasingly used successfully. These include coiling, liquid, and particle embolization among others. These minimally invasive techniques now available are safe and cost effective. In this chapter, we will focus on the radiological diagnosis and the role of interventional radiology in the most common clinical settings of post-operative bleeding, after liver surgery, pancreatic surgery, after nephrectomy, liver transplantation, and digestive tract surgery.
