Abstract
As the use case patterns show, the smart factory provides a bundle of new opportunities to drive performance and increase competitive advantages for a company. New technologies require new skills, in particular digital skills. Additionally, and even more importantly for implementing smart manufacturing, use cases become the holistic understanding of any kind of process from end-to-end. The combination of new technologies with the existing knowledge about processes and pain points is a challenging task. Many interdependencies need to be considered, and knowledge from different functional departments has to be intelligently exploited to create value. Implementing the required changes is a major challenge, with many hurdles. This section shows how to overcome them successfully.
