Losing Sleep: Examining Struggles for Value and Counterproductive Work Behaviors in an Era of Globalization

Globalization, Human Rights and Populism

Abstract

In the current turbulent times, human resource management is influenced by globalization and the dynamic growth of new technologies. Companies respond promptly and flexibly to these changes and adapt to the needs of the market, while also taking into account the requirements of employees. If a company wants to withstand tough competition, it must incorporate new ways, methods, techniques, approaches, and technologies of human resource management and try hard to avoid making errors. The presented chapter brings the focus of the audience to some of the behavioral errors, which are commonly found in the workplace among managers and employees, or supervisors and subordinates. Human resource management is a broad context within which several phenomena can be observed, some of them positive, such as work engagement, job satisfaction, and personal well-being, other rather negative, counterproductive work behaviors, such as aggression, workplace bullying, or abusive supervision, which lead to trauma, anxiety, and stress. This chapter aims to present an overview of these aspects with emphasis on counterproductive work behaviors, unfortunately very common in the workplaces around the world these days, and that is abusive supervision or, as will be introduced further, bossing.

Portions of the work was first published in Birknerová, Z., Zbihlejová, L., & Droppa, M. (2021). Assessment of abusive supervision – BOSS methodology. Journal of Business Economics and Management, 22(1), 197–216.
