Abstract

This chapter provides a hxstorical and sociocontextual view of LGBTQ+ issues in the US over the last 30 years with a brief history prior to the 1990s. The purpose of this chapter is to situate readers within the hxstorical and intersectional contexts of queer activism, resistance, and celebration. For readers who are familiar with major LGBTQ+ hxstorical events over the past 30–50 years, this chapter will serve as a refresher and reminder, while also drawing our focus on intersectional hxrstories. For readers who are newer to queer hxrstory, this chapter will provide a brief overview with resources for continued reading on your own, with a study group, and/or with your students. Throughout the chapter timeline, Pause and Jot activities are included for readers to pause and reflect at the beginning of each decade/hxrstorical moment.
