Abstract
The first chapter in this book provides an overview of the content and the context for integrating play in health care settings where nurses and other health care professionals meet children and their families. It is important to have a shared understanding of some of the terminology that helps to not only explain the importance of play in general but also how play may be of beneficially used as a therapeutic tool when communicating with children. This chapter positions the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as a core feature when considering developmentally sensitive communication. Health care professionals should aim to provide holistic and humanistic care by using play and play-based ways to facilitate interactions and potentially reduce symptoms associated with paediatric medical traumatic stress.
