Abstract

Resin composite materials have evolved exponentially in the last decade. Improvements have included an improvement in mechanical properties and improved aesthetics. Their use has expanded to the posterior quadrants. However, some of their limitations continue such as polymerization shrinkage and microleakage.

Bulk fill materials are now considered suitable for posterior restorations due to the many improvements in their physical and mechanical properties.

It is essential that the dentist understands the properties of the earlier resin composite materials in order to be able to understand the potential of new resin developments such as bulk fill composites.
