Abstract

Waste management (WM) is a very trans- and interdisciplinary field of research. How wastes are managed, collected, treated and disposed have a significant impact on the public health and environment. WM and its strategies have been clearly broadened and changed during the past 25 years. Further, burden on limited resources will cause environmental degradation and fragility, while resources in dumps are lost posing a threat to our environment. Hence, the UN and European Union currently seek an effort to create a “sustainable and circular society” via the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Circular Economy (CE) Package. This paper provides an overview of main goals, trends, challenges and data availability in global waste management with thefocus to show the importance of a sound database needed to enhance a well-founded and goal-oriented decisions makingtowards a circular economy.
