Abstract

Many diseases can cause dyspnea; the differential diagnosis of sudden-onset or acute dyspnea is relatively limited. Chronic dyspnea can be difficult to diagnose and manage; three categories (cardiac, pulmonary, and others) should be thoroughly evaluated because some patients may have more than one cause for dyspnea.
