Abstract
This chapter discusses how persons might cope more wisely with adversity through the conceptual lens of the H.E.R.O.E model of wisdom. The five interrelated components of wisdom are identified and research supporting the link between each component, as measured by the Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (SAWS; Webster JD, The Cambridge handbook of wisdom. Cambridge University Press, 2019) and adaptive coping is described. A description of how wisdom might develop over time, and ways in which wisdom might be enhanced or taught are also briefly discussed. Finally, examples of empirical research demonstrating a link between the SAWS and adaptive coping are illustrated.
