Complementary and Alternative Treatments for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Pediatric Neurogastroenterology

Abstract

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are used by 40% to 70% of pediatric gastroenterology patients. CAM therapies are even more popular in children with a low perceived effect of conventional treatment, which is often the case in functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). This chapter discusses complementary treatment options for FGIDs in which they are used often: infantile colic, gastroesophageal reflux, functional abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome, and functional constipation. Since a wide range of CAM treatments exists and there is a shortage of good quality evidence on safety and efficacy of these treatments in children, only those treatments that have been studied best or are being used most, including herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy, yoga, and manual-based therapies, are being discussed.
