Abstract
Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous unit which can leave temporary or permanent scarring. The occurrence of scars in patients with a history of acne is >80%; furthermore, this risk is particularly elevated in patients who develop most severe form of acne (5–10% of all patients). Residual post-acne scars can lead to detrimental psychologic effects impairing patients’ quality of life. Acne scars can be divided into atrophic, hypertrophic, or keloid; furthermore, the atrophic variant can be classified as ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling scars. Fortunately, there have been several recent advances in therapeutic options to treat each type of acne scarring. The chapter discusses these treatments with a focus on chemical peels, microneedling, lasers, injectable fillers, lipofilling, and microsurgery.
