Mood Disorders in Transplantation: Bipolar Disorder Spectrum

Transplant Psychiatry

Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) can pose specific challenges in patients needing and waiting for solid organ transplantation and in organ transplant recipients. Increased disease burden compared to the general population, role of psychotropics in end-stage organ failure, neuropsychiatric adverse effects of standard immunosuppressants, concern for nonadherence, and psychological effects of transplantation are some aspects affecting transplant outcomes in patients with BD. In this chapter, we will review these issues as well as measures to increase the potential for successful transplantation in patients with BD. The complexities of pharmacological management of BD pre- and post-transplantation will also be addressed.
