Career Options in the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Industry

Abstract

An imperative of a professional practice is to ensure transformations. Identifying opportunities in evolvements of healthcare systems and being cognisant of changes in expectations of society warrants validity and relevance of the professional practice. This is what we have witnessed in hospital and community pharmacy. The chapter briefly contemplates how clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care have shaped the provision of direct patient care services and expanded the scope of hospital and community pharmacy practice. Innovations in practice such as use of robotics and collaborative practice are put forward. Domains are outlined to describe relevant competences and provide an insight into professional characteristics that support practising as hospital and community pharmacists. Attributes that lead to professional fulfilment are considered, and experiences and prospects for specialisation and professional development to become advanced practitioners are described. Advancement in pharmacy education and participation in translational research and implementation science contribute to pharmacist capacity building and empowerment to approach the transformation of pharmacy practice for the next decades. Emphasis is given to describe attributes of successful hospital and community pharmacy practice by highlighting the patient-centric goal, collaborative model, safe culture, digitalisation and entrepreneurship.
