Inclusive Digital Education

Abstract

Education empowers full human personality development and enhances respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Educational equity is a key principle and an important prerequisite for inclusive societies without discrimination. The interest in inclusive education that supports and welcomes diversity of students with special educational needs and disabilities was first enshrined in law in the early 1970s. Inclusive education is the result of systemic reform, which, among others, encompasses changes in curricula, content, educational materials and teaching methods, providing learning environments that meet each student’s needs. Accommodations and adaptations of ed ucational content, devices and services should be personalised for students, based on their preferences and diverse learning needs. The purpose of this chapter is to present an innovative process of designing and developing inclusive transmedia educational materials. To this end, a case study is described and analysed in detail from the idea to its implementation and evaluation by potential users. The case study, called Waking Up In the Morning (WUIM), focuses on Activities of Daily Living training and combines various modes of interaction with learning content, including traditional board games, standard 2D and interactive 360ο videos created with a novel film-production methodology, as well as augmented and virtual reality technologies. The psycho-pedagogical affordances are derived from the principles of inclusive pedagogies based on learning theories, differentiated instruction, universal design for learning, multimedia learning, transmedia learning and the contribution of gamification techniques and cutting-edge technologies to education. The authors recommend this innovative process to educators, therapists, developers and education decision-makers as a good practice guide for creating meaningful content.
