Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy of the Spine

Abstract

Unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) is a universal minimally invasive technique for treating degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine. To prepare for this surgical intervention, the surgeon must understand the basic principles, properly prepare the equipment, and select the necessary instruments. Without understanding the basic principles of UBE, it is impossible to carry out the operation correctly, as it is fraught with the development of serious complications. In this chapter, we consider the basic principles of UBE, highlight the necessary equipment and instruments, and share advice on the operating room setup and arrangement. Access options and navigation with the C-arm are also considered. Routine adherence to the above recommendations will facilitate the surgeon’s work and allow for excellent patient outcomes.
