Abstract
Isolated resection of the left upper lobe anterior segment (S3) is infrequent and considered a challenging anatomical segmentectomy (Handa et al., Ann Thorac Surg 107:1032–9, 2019; Bédat et al., J Thorac Dis 11:4109–4118, 2019; Zhu Y, Mei J, Liu L, Ann Transl Med 6:410, 2018; Stamenovic D, Messerschmidt A, Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg MMCTS 11:2018, 2018; Igai H, Matsuura N, Kamiyoshihara M, Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg MMCTS, 2020; Oizumi et al., J Visc Surg 1:16, 2015; Nomori H OM, Illustrated anatomical segmentectomy for lung cancer, Springer, Tokyo, 2012; Gossot D, Seguin-Givelet A, J Thorac Dis 10:S1134–44, 2018; Karenovics W, Gonzalez M, J Thorac Dis 11:53–6, 2019). Nowadays, S3 segmentectomy may be a valid option to resect various benign lesions, some non-solid tumors with ground-glass opacity suggesting early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and centrally located metastases. Here, we describe the operative steps for a left S3 segmentectomy and thoroughly explain the tips and tricks to successfully perform this procedure.
