Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is widely used in intensive care units. In this chapter, we review the historical aspects that allowed the development of modern ventilation; since its first description and implementation in critically ill patients, respiratory assistance has saved the lives of a large number of patients with different medical problems. Among its advantages, we find the ability to preserve gas exchange and replace respiratory function; all this has made it one of the most effective procedures to treat patients with respiratory failure. Its most frequent indications will be described and the possible complications that may arise, and finally a description is made about the hemodynamic effects of mechanical ventilation and the adaptation of the patient. Knowing these basic principles can optimize ventilatory support and reduce potential complications by improving the safety and prognosis of critically ill patients.
