Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is a supportive measure frequently needed as a life support system used to ensure a proper blood gas exchange and to assist in ventilating the lung during the acute phase of a patient in sepsis (responsible for 70% of all cases of acute respiratory distress, ARDS) or septic shock. The failure of the lungs represents a worsening outcome with an increase in the morbi-mortality and an increase in the length of stay in the ICU. Also, sepsis increases the possibility of ventilator-induced lung injury. Therefore, the mechanical ventilation strategies should be optimized and personalized for each patient according to individual clinical needs to achieve adequate oxygenation. Despite the progress in general mechanical ventilation management, sepsis-related lung injury has some particular details that could influence the way we manage this patient in general.
