Abstract

The process of weaning and liberation of a patient from mechanical ventilation is an essential practice in the ICU. In order to accomplish these tasks, we have to depend on protocolized methods based on:

  1. (a)

The clinical background and progression of the patient.

  2. (b)

    The performance of physiological tests.

  3. (c)

    Daily routine awakening trials.

  4. (d)

    Spontaneous breathing trials.

This will help us to assess and predict the readiness of the patient and to increase the chances of success.
