Postoperative Mechanical Ventilation: Fast Track

Personalized Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is indicated for patients that are not able to sustain spontaneous breathing. Complications associated with prolonged MV, however, are numerous. Fortunately, a majority of surgical patients meet the criteria for extubation within the first 8 h postoperatively. As such, the plan to extubate should be established long before endotracheal tube placement as the benefits of avoiding prolonged MV have already been well established. The fast-track extubation pathway allows clinicians to offer high-value care via avoidance of complications and has proven itself as a valuable approach in appropriately selected patients.
