Abstract
In January of 1980, I assumed my duties as professor of the chair of internal medicine and chairman of one of the two Departments of Internal Medicine at the Hatzicostas State Hospital, a hospital with no academic tradition or technical and material infrastructure, and which was inadequate even for a regional hospital. It was the former sanatorium of Ioannina. Several of the departments of the regional hospital were redesignated as university departments with little justification.
