Abstract

The Men’s Rights Activism (MRA) movement holds intrinsic ties to the Gamergate movement; MRAs appropriated the Gamergate movement as a vehicle for their own socio-political beliefs, which was easily done, as much of Gamergate’s rhetoric already aligned with MRA’s beliefs. Because of this appropriation, Gamergate was deeply influenced by MRA politics and ideologies, and became as much an MRA movement as a gaming movement. This chapter looks at the symbiotic relationship between the two groups, as well as the relationship between MRAs and the ‘manosphere’: a collective of groups and websites from which MRA hails. The purpose here is to critically examine the dominant ideologies and goals of key groups within the manosphere (including Red Pill, Incels, Pickup Artists, FeMRA, and Men Going Their Own Way). This includes, for example, examining the MRA assertion that women hold power over men, and that men are disproportionately oppressed in comparison to women. Finally, the chapter delves into the escalating patterns of MRA violence (including multiple mass murders) and the subsequent media coverage, which preceded and fed into the Gamergate movement.

Notes

  1. 1.

In The Matrix, the main character is offered both a blue and a red pill, the latter of which is promised to show him ‘the truth’ about the world (1999).

  2. 2.

For those unfamiliar, Reddit is an (often-controversial) collection of communities/forums covering a broad diversity of subjects.

  3. 3.

This particular topic referred to ‘slutty’ women preferring to accept unwanted sexual contact (rape) than to engage in the ‘awkward’ situation of refusing (“This is what men need to understand. Treating her like a person is the most counterproductive thing you can do when you’re dealing with a slut”) (The Red Pill 2016b).

  4. 4.

AVFM’s 2015a conference was cancelled (allegedly due to a lack of resources to sustain both the conference and their activist actions simultaneously); however, in 2016 they ran the conference again in London.

  5. 5.

Buchanan first ran in the 2015 general elections (Ashfield), where he garnered 153 votes, compared to winner Gloria De Piero’s (Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities) 19,448 votes. Fellow party candidate Ray Barry (Broxtowe) also lost to a female candidate, having only garnered 63 votes (BBC 2015).

  6. 6.

Arguably, FeMRAs feel that all women should ascribe to the same structures that have significantly contributed to their own identities and choices.

  7. 7.

Bloomfield’s moniker of ‘JudgyBitch’ is of her own creation, and served as the title of her original website.

  8. 8.

There is a frequent crossover between MRAs/the manosphere and the white supremacist movement, particularly the ‘alt-right’. Arguments that women receive ‘unfair advantages’ over men are often combined with the same arguments regarding racial minorities and Caucasians, and groups such as TheRedPill often refer to ‘cultural Marxism’, which describes the conspiratory notion that people in positions of influence have “promoted and even enforced ideas which were intended to destroy traditional Christian values and overthrow free enterprise: feminism, multiculturalism, gay rights and atheism” (Wilson 2015). As an additional example of this overlap in membership, contributors to Return of Kings have written articles discussing their attendance at white supremacist (‘nationalist’) events (Forney 2015).

  9. 9.

Second wave feminists created Rape Crisis Centres to provide local services and hotlines to support rape and sexual abuse survivors (Matthews 1994; Jones and Cook 2008).

  10. 10.

This is reminiscent of Valizadeh’s proposal to reduce/eradicate occurrences of rape by legalising it on private property, thereby making it impossible for a woman to go home with a man and (legally) refuse to have sex with him (2015d). This is based on the common MRA conception that women must take ‘responsibility’ for their actions (i.e. going home with a man), and that it is resultantly their own fault if they are raped for failing to do so.

  11. 11.

In regards to the title, Rodger explained that his “life didn’t start out dark and twisted”, but that “humanity forced [his] hand” (Rodger 2014b).

  12. 12.

Earlier in the same year, 16 year old Christopher Plaskon murdered 16 year old Maren Sanchez (stabbing her repeatedly in the neck, face and chest) after she rejected his request to attend prom with him.

  13. 13.

The removal of the website was seemingly informed by the increased attention that it received after the massacre, in conjunction with the plethora of personal information (specifically, user photographs) collated on there. On PUAHate’s successor site (‘SlutHate.com’), one commenter suggested that the website’s owner purged its content in part because he was a “Convicted pedo posting [child porn] and [underage girls] on a site that’s now been connected to an incel mass murder that’s generated TONS of press. [Smiley faces] Safe to say that [the moderator’s] violated probation somehow and is now fucked” (SlutHate 2014).

  14. 14.

‘Doxxing’ refers to the practise of disseminating private and identifying information pertaining to the target, for example, their home address, phone number, bank details and so forth.
