Abstract

This chapter analyses the incidence of lexemes with the stem europ* (in German) and euroop* (in Finnish) in two kinds of documents: in the national curriculum for the Finnish comprehensive school (POPS 2014) and for the Finnish upper secondary school (LOPS 2016), and in two German textbook series for Finnish upper secondary school. In the curricula, these incidences were recorded manually. With regard to the textbooks, the Voyant and AntConc software were used to collect data and visualise the frequencies. The second step was to identify concepts from the incidence of the lexemes: to what do they refer, and what are the contexts and connotations of the referential lexemes in the curricula and textbooks? Thus, the study seeks to reveal how concepts of Europe are constructed by curricula and textbooks, as potential conceptualisations to be taken up by students.
