Journalism Pedagogy in Transitional Countries

Abstract

Journalism in countries with State control is often subject to political, economic and other pressures. This chapter addresses the case of Slovenia and the development of journalism between the 1990s and the present. During this period, the Slovenian media transformed from State-owned to public broadcasting and commercial media. The main challenges were posed by previous media owners with privatisation and struggle for control over media ownership. The media landscape also needed new legislation. The journalists were eager to work in independent media without State pressures, such as censorship or influence over editorial staff. Journalism education supported the social and political changes by transforming the Journalism study programme as journalists often emphasised the importance and lack of practical experience among young journalists. Universities responded by implementing new practical courses and founding new study programmes for training multi-skilled professionals. Media professionals endorsed these changes in the media landscape and journalism education as positive. Still, they recommend further legislation improvements to follow the media dynamics. They also acknowledge certain pressures and obstacles still present in the 2020s, such as political attempts to influence reporting. Lastly, journalism education should follow industry demands and be regularly revised.
