Abstract

The Viennese neuropsychiatrist Heinz Hartmann was one of the founders of ego psychology, which he viewed as the basis for general psychology. He became the leading formalistic theoretician of mainstream psychoanalysis and, later in his life, “Freud’s heir apparent” in New York.
